--By Ed Durrant - DD5LP After reading a question on the X6200 groups.io list about how to fix the X6200 to a photo tripod. I thought to myself, I didn't see a connection for a tripod on the radio and I was right. Apparently the ICOM IC-705 has one. Then I had an idea and using the two components I did not use from the Radioddity RH1 cup holder mount kit that I adapted to hold my G106 radio, (see the other blog post on that small project). I was able to create a tripod connection piece for the X6200. Here are a few pictures to show the simple creation of this addition: Take the belt-clip bracket from the cup-holder-adapter pack and drill a hole through the "O" of Radioddity: Now take the swivel joint from the Coffee Cup kit and unscrew the ring: Thread the swivel mount into the belt clip mount and screw the ring back on the other side. Now, as luck would have it (actually, I checked first) the screw holes on the belt clip bracket are exactly the same distance apart as the screws that hold the bottom plate on the X6200, so with some longer screws of the same diameter and thread pitch of the cover plate screws, this bracket is attached to the bottom of the X6200. BUT BE CAREFUL - the screws used must not be so long that they can damage the circuit board components under the plate, which will affect the warranty. The swivel mount can now screw onto a standard photo tripod.

Updating the Xiegu X6200 firmware To update the Xiegu X6200, only use the firmware that you can find on our support pages, and click here to learn more Change Log about new firmware. Before carrying out an update, make sure that the firmware is still available for download on our support page. All firmware updates for the Xiegu X6200 are supplied with 'Release Notes'. Note: Please carefully read the 'Release Notes' and all documents contained in the firmware archives! Never update your radio if it is not really necessary, or in other words: 'Don't fix it if it's not broken'! The Xiegu X6200 firmware is normally updated in three steps: Step 1: Prepare microSD/flash memory card First, prepare a microSD/flash memory card that can be used to upgrade the Xiegu X6200 operating system. Step 2: Update of the Xiegu X6200 operating system (APP) Update the application software (APP) using the prepared microSD/ flash memory card. Step 3: Update of the baseband firmware of the Xiegu X6200 (FIRMWARE) Then use the updated system to update the baseband firmware (FIRMWARE). Note: The Xiegu X6200 must be connected to a stable 13.8V power supply during the entire update process in order to update the firmware. Before you start the update process, turn off the radio and remove the battery pack. After the update has been completed (all steps), turn off the radio again and reapply the battery pack. 1.Preparing the microSD/flash memory card You will need: 1) A microSD/flash memory card with at least 4 GB capacity 2) A computer to read/write a microSD/flash memory card (if necessary, with an adapter if the computer is intended for SD sized memory cards) 3) A PC with Windows (7/10/11) operating system 4) A program to write to microSD/flash memory cards. On the following pages we use 'Rufus' for this purpose. You can get Rufus at the following URL: https://rufus.ie/. Other operating systems such as Linux or MacOS do offer similar programs such as balena Etcher (https://etcher.balena.io/) for writing binary images to a microSD-card. 1.1.Writing the Xiegu X6200 firmware to the microSD/flash card 1) First unpack the update archive into a directory of your choice on your PC. 2) Insert an empty microSD/flash memory card (with adapter if needed) into the slot of your PC's read/write device. 3) Then start the program 'Rufus' by double-clicking on the corresponding exe file (you will usually find this in the 'Tools' subdirectory of the update archive). Run the program as administrator. You may first have to confirm a security prompt from your operating system with 'Yes'. 4) Next you will see the user interface of the 'Rufus' program. 5) First check that the inserted microSD/flash card has also been recognized by the operating system. 6) Also check whether the correct start type has been selected. 7) Next click on the Select button using the left mouse button and navigate to the directory in which you previously unpacked the update archive and there to the corresponding subdirectory of the firmware image file. 8) Click on the firmware image file and then select 'Open' 9) The file name of the firmware file is now displayed under 'Boot selection' 10) Now click on Start the button to start the process of writing to the microSD/ flash memory card. 11) A security prompt appears first. This must be acknowledged by clicking on OK. 12) The selected firmware is now written to the microSD memory card. The progress is displayed via a corresponding status bar. 13) As soon as the process has been successfully completed, the status Ready appears. You can now exit the program by clicking on Close. 14) Before you remove the memory card from the PC, click USB Icon on in the status bar of your operating system and then select the corresponding USB drive of the microSD/flash memory and click on ‘Eject’. 15) The microSD/flash memory card may only be removed from the Windows machine when you are prompted to do so. Note: Never remove the microSD/flash memory card from the PC without first 'ejecting' it. 2.Updating the Xiegu X6200 operating system (APP) First of all, check the current version of the APP. FIRMWARE, FPGA and HARDWARE and make a note of the current version strings. 1) After short pressing the [GEN] button, the general/default menu softkeys are displayed at the bottom of the LCD. 2) Short press the [SYSTEM] softkey to call up the corresponding submenu. 3) Now select the 'SYSTEM INFO' item using the MFK rotary control (bottom left of the LCD) and confirm your selection by short pressing the MFK rotary control. 4) The LCD now shows both, the version of the operating system (APP) and the version of the firmware (FIRMWARE). 5) Make note on all four version strings. 6) Turn off the Xiegu X6200. 7) Make sure that the Xiegu X6200 is completely switched off for at least 30 seconds before inserting the microSD/flash memory card you have just prepared into the corresponding slot on the right-hand side of the Xiegu X6200. The 8 contact fingers of the microSD/flash memory card must point towards the LCD display. The slot for the microSD/flash memory card has a mechanism similar to a ballpoint pen. If you carefully push the microSD/flash memory card in as far as it will go, it will then come out again by about 3 mm. This is the condition required for the microSD/flash memory card to be read by the Xiegu X6200. However, if you push the microSD/flash memory card in again as far as it will go, the microSD/flash memory card will come out 1 cm and you can then simply remove it again. 8) Insert the microSD/flash memory card into the microSD/flash slot on the right-hand side of the Xiegu X6200. 9) Remove the battery pack 10) Connect the Xiegu X6200 to an external power supply of 13.8V (12V min). The Xiegu Label besides the power button will start flashing red (because there is no batter pack inserted). 11) Press the [POWER] button until the Xiegu logo is seen on the screen. The Xiegu label left besides the [POWER] button lights up solid green although the battery pack is missing. 12. After about 15 seconds, the operating system (APP) starts to update itself automatically without the need for manual intervention. 13) During the APP update process various status information is output on the Xiegu X6200. 14) After a total of about 45 seconds, the APP update process is completed and the shutdown message ‘[Info] Update finished!’ Is displayed on the Xiegu X6200, after which the Xiegu X6200 shuts down automatically. 15) Wait until the Xiegu Label besides the power button again starts flashing red. Note: Do not remove power or press any key on the Xiegu X6200. It takes at least 3 minutes until the Xiegu label left besides the [POWER] button starts flashing red again. Please be patient. 16) The microSD/flash memory card should now be removed. To do this, press the microSD/flash memory card once more as far in as it will go so that it bounces back and sticks out about 1 cm. You can now remove the microSD/flash memory card. 17) The update of the operating system (APP) is now complete. This completes the first update step. 18) Disconnect the external power supply from the Xiegu X6200. Note: Please do not forget to remove the microSD memory card from the Xiegu X6200 after updating the operating system. Otherwise, the update process will run again the next time you start the Xiegu X6200. 3.Updating the firmware of the Xiegu X6200 (FIRMWARE) After updating the operating system (APP), the firmware must now be updated. Note: The Xiegu X6200 must be connected to a stable 13.8V power supply during the entire update process in order to update the firmware. 1) Make sure that no microSD/flash card is inserted in the slot on the right side of the Xiegu X6200. 2) Remove the battery pack 3) Connect the Xiegu X6200 to an external power supply of 13.8V (12V min). 4) Press the [POWER] button until the Xiegu logo is seen on the screen. The label left besides the [POWER] button lights up solid green although the battery pack is missing. 5) Then press the following buttons in succession: [GEN] → ‘SYSTEM’ to access the system settings menu. 6) Now select 'FIRMWARE UPGRADE' using the inner or outer MFK rotary knob and confirm your selection by short pressing the MFK rotary knob. 7) Now a list of possible baseband firmware versions appears under the heading 'Firmware upgrade'. As a rule, however, there will only be one version. Otherwise, you can select the desired version from a list by pressing the 'PREV' and 'NEXT' softkeys. 8) Confirm your selection by pressing the softkey labeled 'UPGRADE'. 9) Within a few seconds, the following will appear in the title bar one after the other • Firmware Upgrade: Erasing Flash • Firmware Upgrade: Writing Flash • Firmware Upgrade: Done 10) Press the softkey marked ‘QUIT’. 11) Press the softkey marked ‘EXIT’. 12) Press the [POWER] button until the display turns dark and you only see a small, blinking underline cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. 13) Wait until the Xiegu Label besides the [POWER] button again starts flashing red. Note: Do not remove power or press any key on the Xiegu X6200. It takes at least 3 minutes until the Xiegu label left besides the [POWER] button starts flashing red again. Please be patient! 14) Press the [POWER] button until the Xiegu logo is seen on the screen. 15) To check whether the firmware update was successful, short press the [GEN] button, the general/default menu softkeys are displayed at the bottom of the LCD. 16) Short press the ‘SYSTEM’ softkey to call up the corresponding submenu. 17) Now select the 'SYSTEM INFO' item using the MFK rotary control (bottom left of the LCD) and confirm your selection by short pressing the MFK rotary control. 18) The LCD now shows both, the version of the operating system (APP) and the version of the firmware (FIRMWARE). 19) Check if the version, date and time of the operating system (APP) and the version of the firmware (FIRMWARE) correspond with the update package. 20) Finally perform a FACTORY RESET ([GEN] → ‘SYSTEM’ → FACTORY RESET’) in order to prevent any side-effects after updating the firmware. 21) Turn off the Xiegu X6200. 22) Reinsert the battery pack on the back side of the Xiegu X6200. --By Thomas Witherspoon If you’re following the new Xiegu X6200 closely, you might recall that I took a prototype version of the radio out two weeks ago for a POTA activation. Propagation was so challenging–as in, a complete radio blackout in North America due to an X-Class flare–it took about 90 minutes of calling CQ POTA to snag the ten needed for a valid park activation. I had planned to post the activation video on YouTube, but learned shortly after the activation that this particular unit was a proper prototype instead of an early production run radio. This is a detail I misunderstood prior to the unit shipping. I only shared the 2+ hour video to Patreon supporters, but not on my YouTube channel for this reason. Production This past weekend, I received a second Xiegu X6200: this time, a production run unit! POTA Time! Two days ago–Tuesday, June 11, 2024–I took the new X6200 out for a POTA activation on the Blue Ridge Parkway (US-3378). I had a couple of hours that morning to fit in the activation, including a round trip from the QTH. The best site for a quick activation was the Folk Art Center picnic area. Thanks to the early hour, there was no competition for picnic tables. I decided to pair my PackTenna 9:1 End-Fed Random Wire with the X6200. This provided a chance to test the ATU with a readily matchable antenna (in the future, I’ll make it sweat a bit more by using a transformerless random wire antenna). This production run X6200 has the same firmware (version 1.0) as the prototype, but the hardware has received noticeable updates. I spotted two changes–one cosmetic and one that had a positive impact on performance–almost immediately. In the activation video below, you’ll see that I spent a few minutes doing an overview of the X6200. One of the first things I did was set up the X6200 for CW Message memory operation. I demonstrated (after a bit of head-scratching) how to input the CW message using the X6200’s built-in on-screen keyboard. (If the CW Message Memories confuse you, check out the short primer in my previous post). It was a struggle and it wasn’t the X6200’s fault. It was our local star! I decided to start on 40 meters since it was still mid-morning. After calling “QRL?” and hearing no reply, I pressed the second CW message memory button where I loaded “CQ POTA DE K4SWL” and the radio started transmitting. After only a few calls, I started receiving replies–woo hoo! I ended up working my first ten contacts in nine minutes. Excellent! I then logged seven more stations for a total of 17, then QSY’d to the 30 meter band. Turns out, 30 meters was also pretty healthy. I worked a total of ten more stations. Success! This brought my total to 27 contacts in 39 minutes (noting that eight minutes of that was me chatting with the camera between band changes). Overall, excellent results! I had hoped to have enough time to give SSB a go, but I simply didn’t. Still, CW was the mode I was most interested in testing. As with all of my videos, I don’t edit out any parts of the on-air activation time. First Impressions The X6200 definitely held its own during this activation. While I didn’t have pileups, per se, there were times when there were competing stations on frequency. The internal speaker’s audio quality isn’t exactly exceptional (I think it’s a bit weak) but then again few QRP field radios have exceptional speaker audio fidelity–the Icom IC-705, Yaesu FT-818, and Penntek TR-45 being three notable exceptions. As I expected, the ATU easily handled the PackTenna 9:1 UNUN EFRW. Of course, the 9:1 is easy to match even with mediocre ATUs. This Tufteln random wire antenna has no transformer, thus will be a great test for the Xerox 6200’s ATU. Soon, I will test the ATU with more challenging wire antennas, but I suspect it’ll match them. Xiegu is known for having exceptional, wide matching-range ATUs. As noted, there is still a bit of a keyer timing issue, but Xiegu is working on that and, as I say in the video, I know they’ll sort that out since they did on their previous radio models. Also, only minutes prior to publishing this report, I heard that Xiegu will make it possible to change the default filter widths of the three filter options in the next firmware update. Good news indeed. The X6200 battery also seemed to hold up well for the full activation. If I recall correctly, it still had roughly ⅔ of the battery capacity (7.9V) at the end of the activation. I plan to take this loaner X6200 on various field excursions over the next few of weeks or until Radioddity asks for it to be returned. I’ll do my best to handle it with care, but I fully intend to put it through its paces with some POTA and even SOTA activations in CW, SSB, and possibly (if you can believe it) in FT8. I’d really love to see how it handles SOTA DX pileups. As I mention in the video, I’ll give a full, detailed review of the X6200 likely in an upcoming issue of The Spectrum Monitor magazine. Xiegu tends to roll out a lot of updates early in the product life cycle, so I expect numerous firmware updates ahead. I’ll always mention in the field report what firmware version I’m running. RF Direct Sampling is an advanced technique used in radio communication systems. Traditional RF systems rely on heterodyne or superheterodyne architectures where the received RF signal is first mixed with a local oscillator signal to convert it to a lower intermediate frequency (IF). This IF signal is then sampled and processed. However, RF Direct Sampling simplifies this process by directly digitizing the RF signal, bypassing the need for frequency conversion to IF. The Simple Principle Behind It The principle behind RF Direct Sampling is simple yet revolutionary. Its components include a low-noise amplifier (LNA), specific filters, and a high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC). By using a high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC), RF signals can be directly sampled at their operating frequency. From there, digital signal processing (DSP) techniques are applied in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) or similar processing unit to extract the desired information. This method eliminates the need for various mixers, filters, and amplifiers typically found in traditional receivers. Advantages of RF Direct Sampling The RF Direct Sampling approach offers several benefits: -Improved Signal Integrity and Quality: Direct sampling reduces the number of conversion stages, minimizing noise and distortion. This results in a cleaner, high-fidelity signal closer to the original RF wave, enhancing the user's listening experience. -Reduced Complexity: By eliminating multiple mixer and local oscillator stages required in superheterodyne designs, RF Direct Sampling simplifies the receiver's architecture. This can increase reliability, reduce points of failure, and lower production costs. -Wide Frequency Coverage: Instantaneous wide band reception allows for receiving a broad spectrum of frequencies simultaneously, beneficial for software-defined radios (SDRs) processing multiple frequencies at once. -Enhanced Dynamic Range: High-resolution ADCs used in direct sampling offer a greater dynamic range, enabling the receiver to handle strong and weak signals without distortion or overload. -Flexibility and Future-Proofing: Digital signal processing (DSP) flexibility enables updates and improvements via software, extending the equipment's lifespan and enabling new features without hardware changes.   What is HF radio? Known as the decameter band or decameter wave, high frequency (HF) is the ITU designation[1] for the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves (radio waves) between 3 and 30 megahertz (MHz). The HF band is a major part of the shortwave band of frequencies, so communication at these frequencies is often called shortwave radio. Because radio waves in this band can be reflected back to Earth by the ionosphere layer in the atmosphere – a method known as "skip" or "skywave" propagation – these frequencies are suitable for long-distance communication across intercontinental distances. The band is used by international shortwave broadcasting stations (2.310 - 25.820 MHz), aviation communication, government time stations, weather stations, amateur radio and citizens band services, among other uses. Different from VHF (Very High Frequency - 30MHz-300MHz) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency - 300MHz-3GHz) radios, HF radios cover far greater distances thanks to ionospheric refraction – but the HF radio signals are prone to distortion by atmospheric conditions such as geomagnetic storms or solar flares that radio users cannot control. HF communications are best suited for long distance communication between ground operators and base stations. Some HF radios normally cover HF band only, like the Xiegu G106, Xiegu G90, Xiegu X6100.   What about VHF/UHF radios? VHF radio waves operate in a band between 30-300 megahertz, while UHF radio signals are propagated within 300 megahertz and 3 gigahertz. These radio waves travel over line of sight, making them ideal for local communications over a few kilometres. Indeed, VHF radio waves normally travel within line of sight along the Earth’s surface. Common uses for VHF are FM radio broadcasting, television broadcasting, two way land mobile radio systems (emergency, business, private use and military), long range data communication up to several tens of kilometres with radio modems, amateur radio, and marine communications. Air traffic control communications and air navigation systems (e.g. VOR, DME & ILS) work at distances of 100 kilometres or more to aircraft at cruising altitude. VHF was used for analog television stations in the US, and continues to be used for digital television. UHF radio waves propagate mainly by line of sight; they are blocked by hills and large buildings although the transmission through building walls is strong enough for indoor reception. One of the biggest pros of UHF radios is that they do a much better job of penetrating barriers in urban locations, like concrete, steel, and wood. So this kind of radio is best suited for use indoors, including buildings with multiple floors, in industries such as manufacturing, distribution, education, retail, hospitality, and healthcare. They also work well for businesses that function in both indoor and outdoor settings, where there are a lot of surrounding buildings. Nowadays, some radios are capable of transmitting on both VHF & UHF bands, like Radioddity GS-5B, making it meet more outdoor and indoor activities requirements. 1. What forms of payment do you accept?
Radioddity.com currently accepts PayPal* or credit card for all orders.
*When purchasing with PayPal, your shipping address will automatically default to the address on file with PayPal, regardless of the shipping address you enter on your Radioddity.com order.

2. Why has my credit card payment failed?

Yes, we do! We ship to US & EU countries. For some products, we ship to CA.

7. How are warranties handled?
Repairs on defective merchandise are handled by the manufacturers and not by Radioddity unless otherwise indicated. If any item arrives damaged due to shipping, immediately contact the courier. Keep all shipping materials and contact us immediately.

8. Why didn't I receive an order confirmation email after my PayPal payment is completed?
We send a confirmation email to your primary PayPal email address or the e-mail address you have specified if you used the "PayPal Express Checkout" method. Make sure that you have a Radioddity account registered under your PayPal account's primary e-mail address.
In rare circumstances, a technical bug confirmed by PayPal can get in the way. If you do not receive any information at all, and your order does not appear in your Radioddity account, please contact us and send us your order details.

11. Do you ship to PO boxes or Military APO/FPO addresses?
Only USPS can ship to both PO Boxes and Military APO/FPO addresses. The items have to be less than 2kg. Please allow additional time for orders to be shipped to these addresses. Express shipping cannot be sent to both PO Boxes and Military APO/FPO addresses.

12. Why am I unable to track my order?
It can sometimes take 24-48 hours or so for tracking information to update once an order has shipped from our warehouse.
Occasionally, a package may not receive the proper origin and transit scans while on its journey to you, so neither us nor express is able to track the exact location of the package in transit.
Please email us if you do not receive your order by the end of the quoted time frame. Please note that orders shipping via UPS can be delivered as late as 9:00 pm local time in some areas.

13. Taxes, Customs, & Duties
If the package is checked by your country's customs office when the item arrives in your country, most websites are declaring that you are responsible for import duties, tariffs, and taxes. However, Radioddity will be happy to go fifty-fifty with customers. Quality customer service is our highest value and we try our best to reduce our customer’s loss.

15. What do I do if received the wrong item?
Return the wrong item. If the item you received is completely different from the one you ordered, please contact our Customer Service with photos or videos of the different product. If a return is necessary, replacement plus return shipping cost will be issued to you on receiving the returned product. Or if you decide to keep it, we will offer a 10% discount for buying it.

16. How do I return defective items?
If your product turns out to be a defective one with physical damage within 30 days from the initial receiving date. You can mail the item back in the original package without any wear and tear for a free replacement. However, you will need to provide photos and videos showing the defect(s) of the product.
*NOTE: We strongly recommend obtaining and saving your return tracking number until you are notified that we have completed your refund.*

17. When will a replacement be sent?
Replacements are treated the same way as that of new orders -- they typically arrive in 10 to 13 days. If a product needs to be returned for replacement, the replacement is sent after receiving the returned item.

18. How long does it take for me to get a refund?
It may take 1 or 2 weeks for your return to reach our warehouse. Once it is received and inspected (usually within 72 hours of arrival) your refund will be processed and automatically applied to your credit card or original method of payment within 2 days. Please note that depending on your credit card company, it may take additional 2-10 business days after your credit is applied for it to post to your account.
